Welcome to Mrs. Alfred's Kindergarten!
Welcome to Kindergarten. I am very excited to start the 2017-2018 school year off. I just know that it is going to be a super year. I am even more excited to have your child in my classroom. This is an exciting time for your child, although he/she may be a little apprehensive about going to "real" school. This is also a time of mixed emotions for parents---joy that your child is ready for school, but sadness because he/she is no longer a "baby"! The first day of school will mark one of the most important milestones in your child's life. Be assured that I will do my best to make this school year an enjoyable time for your child, but also a time filled with real learning. The skills we practice daily in kindergarten are the building blocks for your child's future success in school and in life! You will be amazed at how much your child will learn in kindergarten. We will start with the sounds of letters and before you know it, your child will be reading sentences. If we work together, I know your child will be successful. I look forward to getting to know you more. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
This week we are talking about Families. We are continuing to talk about letters of the alphabet and the difference between a letter and a number. Our sight words we are learning are "I" and "can." Please review these daily with your child. Also, have your child practice writing his/her first name at home. First letter uppercase followed by lowercase letters. Work on correct letter formation of letters in name. We are also continuing to talk about shapes. We will be comparing shapes this week using different attributes.

I use class dojo for my classroom behavior management. This is an online program that tracks your child’s positive and negative behaviors. You will receive an invitation for class dojo at the beginning of the school year. You can either go to www.classdojo.com or download the class dojo app. Once you have done this, you will be given a unique code that is specifically for your child. This will allow you to see only your child's behavior and messages from me. No one else can see this. Please check your dojo account daily. This is how I keep in contact with you concerning your child's behavior, both positive and negative. It is also a way for me to send messages and reminders to you.
Your child will start each day with no points. Your child will earn/lose points throughout the day. Each time your child makes positive choices, then your child earns points. If your child is making poor choices, then your child will lose points. If your child is having a rough day, I will print out their tracked behavior for the day with an attached note that is to be signed and returned the next day.
These are the sight words your child must know by the end of kindergarten. These are in the order in which we learn the words. I would put these on index cards and study a few each week. It is ok to work ahead. Your child will be tested every few weeks on these words.
